Since 2001 Placer County officials have been promising us a new animal shelter in Auburn in 'three-to-five years.' In fact, in 1999 the county used tax dollars to contract with The Humane Society of the United States to review the animal shelter operations and suggest improvements. Their final report addressed the need for a new Auburn animal shelter to replace the outdated facility.
While at the same time the 2000/2001 grand jury report stated "The Auburn shelter was built in the early 1970s and no longer offers adequate space nor amenities to ensure quality care of the animals it houses." It further recommended, "that the Placer County Board of Supervisors ensure that expansion of animal control shelter operations into new facilities continues to be a high priority on the list of pending capital improvements."
Shortly thereafter, county officials used more of your tax dollars to hire an architect who provided a building plan for a new Auburn shelter. Yet, here we are six years later, still without a new Auburn shelter, and with more promises from the Board of Supervisors to "build it in three years."
While they waste your hard-earned revenue on more plans for a new animal shelter in Roseville -- where no shelter currently exists and the need for one has become controversial -- animals are suffering needlessly in Auburn simply because the shelter is inadequate to provide essential housing.
We need your help to change this shocking situation. There are laws in place protecting animals from abuse – we MUST hold our government accountable to the same laws. Join thousands of Americans in urging the Placer County Board of Supervisors to fulfill their promise from 2001 and elevate the importance of a new Auburn shelter facility by expediting the initial building plans to begin construction before March 2008 by completing your information at right to sign the Petition to stop the needless pain and suffering. And then, please, tell a friend..
Please note that when you sign the petition, you will receive periodic email alerts. This is extremely important, since taking action online is a critical part of our animal protection work. However, you can unsubscribe at any time.
It is unacceptable that local government thinks they are unaccountable for their promises. It is unacceptable that the homeless animals at Placer County Animal Shelter are forced to endure the conditions that the outdated facility imposes on them. We believe that all animals deserve to be treated humanely and we urge the Board of Supervisors to fulfill their promise from 2001 and elevate the importance of a new Auburn shelter facility, by expediting building plans to begin construction before March 2008.
