Months before this nationwide event, the Friends group obtained approval from Dick Swenson Director of Placer County Animal Control, to open the shelter for 12 hours on Saturday May 1 and Sunday May 2, in an effort to find homes for the animals at the shelter. For the Friends part, we would schedule volunteers to help people get acquainted with the animals at our facility. For the County?s part, they agreed to staff the clerical and kennel personnel needed to operate the shelter.
Days before the event, we began preparing the shelter ? newly potted plants out front and in the get acquainted area, contributions from Julianna Wiseman, fresh popcorn and ice tea for our visitors.
In conjunction with AAARF (Auburn Area Rescue Foundation) and Placer County SPCA the three groups worked together to refer potential adopters to other adoption locations. On both Saturday and Sunday, in spite of the drizzle, the shelter was bustling with volunteers, a newspaper photographer and most important, people looking for a pet to share their life. At 8:00pm Sunday evening, the Auburn Shelter reported a RECORD NUMBER OF ADOPTIONS!!
23 adoptions on Saturday (including 2 peacocks!!)
8 adoptions on Sunday
Plus... 5 cats rescued by the Friends group

And?. residual adoptions continued throughout the week of the 3rd as a result of the event.
I can't possibly describe the fantastic job the volunteers did other than to say without them, the adoption numbers would not have been so high. All the dogs got exercised - they were outside more than they were in their runs. For a change, barking was minimal - they were so exhausted they just wanted to sleep. Even the frightened little GSD/mix that stayed at the back of her run before the weekend was now at the front of her run in anticipation of another romp outdoors. Some volunteers even taught them doggies obedience commands.
Well to those of you that helped during the event, I'm forever grateful - helping the animals in this manner is our most important objective. To those of you that support us in so many other ways, I'm certain you are pleased to be a part of this dynamic group.
Now that we're all energized it's time to continue our work and concentrate on our
next event(s)!!
PS Placer County SPCA in Roseville found homes for 76 animals.
PPS Thanks AAARF and SPCA for lending a hand. It?s this type of collaboration that will help the greatest number of animals.
