Turning eight this year, Friends has made remarkable strides in reducing euthanasia of at-risk shelter animals; mostly cats. Our no-kill adoption facility in Auburn is a temporary home for homeless animals for as long as they need us. Through our doors and only with your help, have passed semi-feral barn cats, senior cats, newborn kittens; both with and without their moms, the behaviorally challenged, animals with treatable disease and animals whose time ran out at the County shelter—over 3,500 of them. Come be our guest and celebrate their lives at our newly released video webpage at www.AnimalPlace.com Click on “Video Files” from the menu. While you’re visiting, check out our new “Pet Tips” page -- then drop us a line and tell us what you think or what you’d like us to include. Although Friends has been an advocate for the welfare and prevention of cruelty to animals since its origin, I’m excited to announce that I recently qualified and was confirmed by the Superior Court as a Humane Officer. This honor allows Friends to enforce the laws that protect animals against abuse and neglect and provide a new opportunity to reach out and educate pet owners on the |

proper care and treatment of all animals. Finally, next time you visit your local grocery or department store look for volunteers collecting signatures on an important California initiative for the humane treatment of farm animals: “California Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act”. This important initiative mandates pregnant pigs, veal calves, and egg laying birds have room to stand up, turn around, lie down and extend their limbs. 600,000 signatures must be gathered by February 2008 to qualify for a ballot measure. So, be sure to stop and add your name to the petition. You can also stop by our shelter to sign between 10AM-2PM daily. There’s more info at: www.humanecalifornia.org Just a word of caution -- beware of the “California Farm Animal Protection Act” introduced by the agriculture industry to confuse people and undermine our initiative efforts. Because the name sounds similar, you can easily be fooled into signing the wrong petition that supports the current substandard industry ethics. If someone asks you to sign a petition to help farm animals, be sure to take a minute and read the first paragraph at the top of the petition page—no matter WHAT the signature gatherer TELLS you. As always this time of year, I’ll close by wishing you, your family and loved ones a safe, joyous holiday season and a New Year filled with good health and happiness. Rosemary Frieborn, President |
