Your Pet's Health Continued from page 2

The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends that you take your pet to the veterinarian specifically for a dental exam and, if necessary, cleaning at least once a year. This dental exam can be part of your pet's annual physical examination and vaccinations. If you are concerned about your pet's oral health or if the signs and indications of dental or oral disease are evident be certain to ask your veterinarian to take a good, long look at the pet?s mouth. In the case of chronic oral disease, Dr. Lyon says: ?A thorough physical examination is extremely important. A complete laboratory evaluation is also important and it should include a complete blood count, serum chemistry profiles, thyroid hormone |
profiles, fecal profiles, toxoplasmosis screening, inspection for malabsorption/maldigestion, viral profiles, immune profiles and serum electrophoresis.?
The dental care your veterinarian provides in the clinic, however, will have limited benefits if the follow-up care you give your pet is insufficient. This means that you should feed your pets hard or dry food (no table scraps), use treats that promote dental well-being, and let them play with hard rubber chew toys to exercise the periodontal ligaments. And, oh yes, don?t forget the brushing.
